Department of Business Administration


Welcome to the Department of Business Administration at the College of Social and Management Sciences, CALEB University, Lagos. The Department of Business Administration offers three programs including the Management, Marketing, and the Human Resource Management.

The Department was established in 2007 but academic activities did not commence until 21st January, 2008 at the take-Off Campus. There was a student enrollment of about 30 at the inception with full complement of lecturers. Presently, the department has the best overall result in the University.

The program is designed to provide students for the challenges of the future. It provides a solid foundation in the diverse economic disciplines which relate to the needs of business, industry and government. The study of Business Administration includes courses designed to develop the students understanding and application of knowledge in the areas of accounting, computer, Finance, international business, marketing, legal, environment and ethics quantitative methods.

A student may declare a major in General Business, Human Resource Management or Marketing.  A major in Business Administration enables the student to develop a better understanding of the social, political, and industrial society in which we live. Such an understanding complements the skills developed during the program which are necessary for the effective and efficient operation of a wide range of environmental, business and industrial organizations.

The major generally describes the planning, organizing and controlling of a business including organizational and human aspects with emphasis on various theories of management, the knowledge and understanding necessary for managing people and functions, and decision making.

The Business administration major is structured to provide the broad education students will need for flexibility and mobility as future managers in various possible types of organizations. This permits students to elect one of two tracks to assist them in more adequately fulfilling requirements of their planned initial employment and to prepare students for advanced studies in their chosen fields.

The general business track is offered for students whose career goals require a broad knowledge of the functional areas of management rather than the specialization of a major field.

Human resource management track focuses on personnel administration, organizational behaviour and labour relations. This option is suitable for students planning to enter positions as a staff specialist, training director, wage and salary specialist, employment manager, benefits analyst, and industrial relations executive.

Marketing programme studies the principles, practice and concepts involved in business activities which link products and service between the producer and the consumer. It includes the study of consumers and their behaviour in the market, the channels of distribution, promotional considerations and other related topics. A major in market in major in marketing prepares the student careers with manufactures, distributors, retailers, government and other business operations.

The program is designed to produce graduates with the knowledge and skills to help them excel in their business careers, further academic studies, and fulfill their personal potential. The Department strives to enhance students’ academic experience through relevant faculty teaching activities, community service, applied scholarly endeavors, and professional activities.


The MAJOR OBJECTIVES of the Department of Business Administration are:

  • To recruit and retain diverse student population;
  • To provide students with a broad foundation necessary for further learning through the general core curriculum
  • To provide students a foundation in oral and written communication skills, accounting, economics, statistics and quantitative methods including Operations Research/Management techniques, finance and business laws/ethics;
  • To provide a curriculum that reflects the influence of political, social, legal and regulatory, environmental and technological issues, and the impact of demographic diversity on organizations
  • To develop well-educated and qualified business graduates who are exposed to both teamwork and ethics in leadership;
  • To develop the students’ awareness of global issues and events that affect local, state, and national business affairs;
  • To maintain quality in instruction through innovation in teaching and continuous improvement in intellectual quantity;
  • To strengthen teaching and learning through applied research and instructional scholarly activity, and basic scholarly activity;
  • To provide service to CALEB University the immediate community and the country;
  • To assist students in providing information with regards to job placement, internships, and career opportunities

Admission Requirements

For admission into 100 level, a candidate must possess the SSCE or equivalents with Credits in five subjects at not more than two sittings only. He/She must also have an acceptable score in the Joint Admission Matriculation Examination or its equivalents.

For direct admission into 200 level, a candidate must possess at least two Advanced Level passes in the West African General Certificate of Education equivalents in addition to credits in five subjects or the SSCE or equivalents.

In all cases above, credit passes in English Language and Mathematics are required.
