PHILOSOPHY, AIM AND OBJECTIVES
In order to fully embrace the Academic Standards in Social and Management Sciences for Nigerian Universities, and in the context of the Vision and Mission of our University and those of COSOMAS in particular, the department aims at training communication professionals who would stand as models of public service, whilst acting as agents for change and development. To this end, the following specific objectives have been enunciated:
(a) To offer professionally-oriented undergraduate training for aspiring Nigerian print Journalists, Communicators, Broadcasters, Public Relations and Advertising practitioners, as well as Film and Cinematography operatives.
(b) To train Nigerian print Journalists, Broadcasters, Public Relations, Advertising and Film practitioners for leadership positions in the local and global media space.
(c) To raise and sustain the professional status of Journalism in Nigeria.
(d) To bridge the divergent perspectives of News gathering and dissemination.
(e) To provide Mass Communication Students with the opportunity to master the art of communicating with the masses that transcends all disciplines, whether in writing or broadcasting.
(f) To instil in mass communication students the ability to respect deadlines and work under constant pressure.
(g) To train and encourage Nigerian Mass Communicators to be effective communicators by being able to think quickly, research creatively and WRITE OR BROADCAST concisely to the mass audience.
(h) To train Nigerian media men and women that would be accurate, fair, balanced and objective in their reportage of societal issues.
(i) To produce Nigerian Mass Communicators who will protect the basic principles of the PEOPLES RIGHT TO KNOW as the fourth branch of government or the Fourth Estate of the Realm.
(j) To train media practitioners that will be able to differentiate "Soft News" from "Hard News", Truth from falsehood, responsible Journalism from irresponsible Journalism.
(k) To produce media men and women that will be able to own Newspapers, Magazines, Public Relations and Advertising Agencies, radio and/or television stations
